There are not many retailers who can
attract 15.000 to 60.000 visitors to a store on a single day, and
let alone serve them all. IKEA is one of few or perhaps the only
retailer that can pull this off. The opening of a new IKEA store in
Athens, Greece was a testimony to this. On the opening day, March
26th 2008, the new IKEA store celebrated with 25.000 visitors, 7.930
sales transactions and 23.000 items sold in the restaurant and the
Swedish food market.
The new store is 25,000 m2 and is located in the centre of Athens,
only 5 kilometers from the Acropolis. In addition to the large
showrooms and a warehouse, the new store includes four restaurants,
two cafes and two Swedish food markets. This is the 3rd IKEA Store
in Greece operated by the Fourlis Group, the IKEA franchisees in
Greece. The Fourlis Group also has an IKEA store in Cyprus and is
planning to open an IKEA store in Bulgaria in 2009.
